Mother's Day is a fun family time. We always look forward to celebrating and being with family as we can. Mother's Day also seems to herald the arrival of bears in the vineyard. Not always do we see bears the second Sunday of May, but it was the first time bears arrived to sample our honey several years ago. On subsequent years, the week shortly after Mother's Day seemed the popular arrival time. This year, it was the Wednesday after Mother's Day that a bear visited our back patio. We have a new puppy who rang the first alarm with a bark we did not know he possessed! Shortly, our older dog gave chase, and the bear trotted off, but not before turning around and standing on hind legs to look at us. The bears are a good reminder of how close to the wilderness we are and how precarious is the balance of nature. We do grow muscadines, fruit enjoyed by people and animals alike!
